Three Arrested for Trafficking Epilepsy Medication from Greece

Le Figaro Marseille reports that on Friday, three individuals, aged between 28 and 31, were indicted and placed in pre-trial detention. This action is part of an ongoing investigation into the significant trafficking of pregabalin, an antiepileptic drug also known as Lyrica. Originating from Greece, nearly 300,000 pills valued at approximately 577,822 euros were illegally imported and intended for resale in Marseille.

Health Risks and Regulatory Actions

Pregabalin, while prescribed for epilepsy, generalized anxiety disorders, and neuropathic pain, has seen a rise in misuse, leading to severe health complications such as coma and disorientation. In response, the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) tightened prescription regulations in May 2021 to curb abuse.

Broader Context of Drug Trafficking in Marseille

In related news, last week, 32 individuals were indicted following extensive operations against drug trafficking networks in Marseille's northern districts. These operations led to significant seizures of drugs, cash, and weapons. Amidst these enforcement actions, the anti-narcotics office (OFAST) has also been under scrutiny, with investigations into alleged corruption within the unit.
