Arrests and Pre-Trial Detention
Three suspects of Romanian nationality were placed in pre-trial detention as part of a crackdown on a network responsible for raiding cemeteries in Alsace and neighboring regions. The National Gendarmerie announced the detention following arrests made on April 16.
Widespread Theft and Damage
The looters targeted cemeteries primarily in Haut-Rhin, as well as in Doubs, Vosges, Territoire de Belfort, and Haute-Saône, stealing mainly bronze statuettes. Over 310 victims have been identified, with 270 already filing complaints. The financial damage is estimated to exceed 175,000 euros.
Investigation and Findings
Investigators uncovered two storage areas in Doubs and Haut-Rhin where stolen religious objects were kept. Only metal items were retained for resale, while non-metal objects were discarded at the site. The stolen metal was subsequently sold in Germany.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
Four individuals were initially presented to the Mulhouse judicial court, with three being placed in pre-trial detention. They face charges including theft by an organized gang, damage committed in a meeting, violation of graves, criminal conspiracy, and money laundering. The operation has highlighted the emergence of organized cemetery thefts across several departments.
