Major Strike by French Air Traffic Controllers Disrupts Flights

Air traffic controllers strike: 75% of flights canceled at Orly and 65% at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle this Thursday

Widespread Flight Cancellations Expected on April 25

Traffic will be significantly disrupted this Thursday due to a strike by air traffic controllers across France. The General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) has announced that 75% of flights at Orly and 65% at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle will be canceled. Nationally, about 60% of flights will be affected, with specific impacts of 65% in Marseille, 60% in Toulouse, and 70% in Nice.

Union Warns of "Very Big Delays"

In addition to cancellations, substantial delays are also expected. The National Union of Air Traffic Controllers (SNCTA), which is the majority union, has voiced concerns about the disruptions, especially during the busy spring school holiday period. They have also issued a strike notice for May 9, 10, and 11, coinciding with the Ascension Bridge.

Dispute Over Air Traffic Control Reforms

The strike comes after failed negotiations regarding reforms aimed at increasing productivity in air traffic control. The SNCTA is pushing for salary increases to align with European standards, funded by fees paid by airlines to the DGAC. However, industry leaders argue that these costs would ultimately be passed on to passengers and reduce the competitiveness of French companies.

France: A Leading Country in Air Traffic Control Strikes

Pascal de Izaguirre, president of the main organization of air transport companies, highlighted that France leads Europe in air traffic control strikes, which have significantly impacted the finances of the European aviation sector.

No Strikes During the Olympic Games

Despite the current disruptions, the SNCTA and the Unsa ICNA have promised an Olympic truce, ensuring no strikes for salary reasons from July 26 to September 8, 2023, covering the period of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Legal Reforms and Future Protests

A new law requires air traffic controllers to declare their participation in strikes 48 hours in advance. Despite this, the SNCTA has already planned further strikes for early May, unless solutions are found in ongoing negotiations.
