UFC-Que Choisir Exposes Inadequate SPF in Sun Creams and Calls for Regulatory Action

Inconsistent SPF Ratings

After testing 13 facial sun creams labeled SPF 50 or 50+, UFC-Que Choisir revealed that a third of these products fail to offer the promised level of protection. The consumer association highlighted this issue in a press release published Tuesday, noting the potential misleading nature of the product labels.

Legal and Regulatory Measures Proposed

UFC-Que Choisir has threatened legal action and has already reached out to the General Directorate for Competition and Fraud Repression (DGCCRF). They urge the DGCCRF to penalize the brands involved, increase product checks, and implement measures to halt these deceptive practices.

Specific Brands Under Scrutiny

The tests conducted by UFC-Que Choisir found that out of the 13 creams tested, five did not meet the expected sun protection levels. Notably, four of these products only provided protection equivalent to SPF 30. Major brands like Vichy, Biotherm, Lancaster, Isdin, and Rituals were among those mentioned.

Environmental and Pricing Concerns

The association also pressed the Ministry of the Environment to regulate environmental claims on cosmetic products. Although most products were free from harmful human compounds, a significant number (10 out of 13) were rated poorly for their environmental impact, particularly on aquatic organisms. Additionally, UFC-Que Choisir criticized the high prices of facial sun creams, especially when compared to body sunscreens, with some brands charging up to seven times more.

As summer approaches, UFC-Que Choisir's findings serve as a crucial reminder for consumers to scrutinize sun protection products and for authorities to enforce stricter regulations and oversight.
